人や物、句や節を指すのに用いられる「指示代名詞」。このページでは、so,such,the same を例文つきで解説しています。 特に語順を問われる so,suchの違いと使い方が重要です。So+S+V と So+V+Sの使い分けも頻出ですので、しっかりマスターしましょう。
think, hope, expect, believe, say などの目的語として用いられ、前に述べられたことの代わりとなります。
● Will the horse win the race? - I hope so.
（その馬はレースに勝つだろうか。- そうだといいね。）
※ I hope so = I hope that it will win the race. と、その前に出た文(節)の代わりとなります。
否定：I'm afraid not = I'm afraid that it will not win the race. (勝てそうにないね。) not で前の文(節)の否定の代わりとなります。
◎ So+S+V ＝「その通りだ」, So+V+S ＝「SもまたVである」
○ She plays the violin very well.
● So she does.（その通りだ。）
→ Yes, she plays the violin very well.
● So does Mike. (マイクもまたそうだ。)
→ Mike plays the violin very well, too.

such は、代名詞で「そのような物(人)」、形容詞で「そのような」という意味です。
● She is still a student, and should be treated as such.
（彼女はまだ学生だから、そのように扱われるべきである。）
※ as such (そういうものとして)
● I've never heard such a story.
（そのような話を聞いたことがない。）
※ such の語順に注意しましょう。such＋(a/an)＋数えられる名詞, such＋数えられない名詞, some/no/数詞＋ such＋名詞
● I told you no such thing.
（そのようなことを君に言ってないよ。）
● Give me ten such boxes.
（そのような箱を10個私にもらえるかな。）
◎such＋a[an]＋形容詞＋名詞, so＋形容詞＋a[an]＋名詞
● She is such a clever woman.
● She is so clever a woman.
（彼女はとても利発な女性だ。）
the same で、「同じもの(こと)」。
● I'll have a katsudon. - Give me the same.
（カツ丼頼むぜ。- 俺も同じやつね。）
● This is the same bike that I saw on the street.
（これは通りで見たのと同じ自転車だ。）→同一
● This is the same bike as I saw on the street.
（これは通りで見たのと同じような自転車だ。）→同種
that「同一物」・as「同種類」と区分けされてはいますが、特に口語においては、この区別は明確でありません。
● This is the same bike I saw on the street.
→ that,as を省くため、区別があいまいになります。
