● My father is as old as you.
(私の父はあなたと同じ歳です。)
● She is not as tall as my sister.
(彼女は私の姉妹ほど背が高くない。)
● Tom has three times as many books as Mike has.
(トムはマイクの3倍の本を持っている。) →2倍は、two times as~as…ではなく、twice as~as…。半分はhalf as~as…
①形容詞・副詞の語尾に-er, -est
tall - taller - tallest, old - older - oldest
②語尾が-eの場合、-r, -st
large - larger - largest, nice - nicer - nicest
③語尾が「子音字＋y」の場合、yをiにかえて-er, -est
easy - easier - easiest, pretty - prettier - prettiest
④短母音＋子音字の場合、子音字を重ねて-er, -est
hot - hotter - hottest, big - bigger - biggest
⑤3音節以上、または2音節で語尾が -y, -er, -le, -ow, -some で終わるもの以外→more~, most~
beautiful - more beautiful - most beautiful, slowly - more slowly - most slowly
※handsome - handsomer - handsomest [handsome - more handsome - most handsome]
⑥不規則変化する語
many(much) - more - most, good(well) - better - best, bad(ill) - worse - worst
比較級は語尾に-er をつけ、比較級～＋than… で｢…より~｣。 二つの物を比較する場合に使います。
●Ken runs faster than Jim.
(ケンはジムよりも速く走る。)
●This flower is more beautiful than that one.
(この花はあの花より美しい。) →長い形容詞・副詞は、more＋原級～
● Mt. Fuji is much higher than Mt. Takao.
(富士山は高尾山よりずっと高い。) →差が大きい場合は、much＋比較級～than… で、「…よりずっと～」
● Russia is larger than any other country in the world.
(ロシアは世界中のほかのどんな国よりも大きい。) →比較級～＋than any other ＋単数名詞… 「他のどんな…より～。」⇔最上級
最上級は語尾に-est をつけ、the＋最上級＋in[of]… 3つ以上のものや人を比べて,｢(…の中で)いちばん~｣。形容詞の最上級の前にはtheをつけますが、副詞は省略される場合もあります｡
● John is the tallest boy in our class.
(ジョンは私たちのクラスで一番背が高い。)
● She plays tennis (the) best of the three.
(彼女は３人の中でテニスが一番上手だ。)
※inのあとには範囲を表す語(単数)、ofのあとには数やallなど複数のものがきます｡
● Tokyo is one of the biggest cities in the world.
(東京は世界で最も大きな都市のひとつだ。)
※one of the＋最上級＋複数名詞 で「最も～なもののひとつ」
